Genre: Science Fiction First Person Shooter I'd like to introduce this review on Half Life by saying this follows perfectly on from my quake review, as this game was anticipated greatly using a modified quake 1 engine. From the tram ride into the Black Mesa, you knew you were in for something different and something exciting. Whats the one thing you want in a single play first person shooter? the ability to immerse a gamer in the story line and keep them hooked until the very end with gameplay, storyline, graphics, replay value and multi-player features. And i may say, no other game really comes close to that of Half Life. Yes you knew it here we go, Morgan Freeman the man.. the legend.. who could possibly forget him and his fight to survive. After release Half Life went onto receive the 1998 Game of the Year award from over 50 publications. The struggle and excitement of escaping from a secret underground laboratory where teleportation experiments have gone wrong has obviously hit the nail on the head. This game is one of the most detailed I've played yet, each level is a new adventure and as the storyline unravels things get more exciting and with a nice twist at the end for those who thought they had nearly completed the game think again. Gameplay: 10/10 There is a massive array of weaponry within Half Life. There are 14 classic weapons within half life ranging from frag grenades, satchel charges all the way to rocket launchers, machine guns and crowbars each with individual statistics ill write up a few statistics on some of my personal favourites: Name: Crossbow Weapon category: 3 Range: Long Primary attack: Fire crossbow bolt, 50 pts/bolt; explosive bolt in multi-player Secondary attack: Zoom view, hits instantly in multi-player Ammunition: Neurotoxin-tipped crossbow bolts Capacity: 5 rounds in magazine, 50 in ammo reserve Name: Tau / Gauss Cannon Weapon category: 4 Range: Medium to Long Primary attack: Fully-automatic, 20 pts/beam Secondary attack: Charged-up shot, between 10 and 130 pts/beam Ammunition: Depleted uranium Capacity: Ammo reserve of 100 units Name: Snark Weapon category: 5 Range: Close to Medium Primary attack: Release Snark; 10 pts/Snark bite, 5 pts/Snark burst Secondary attack: None Ammunition: Snark nests Capacity: 15 Snarks Ahh the good old snarks, yes and that's just a few of the many weapons a few of the unusual ones i did leave out the gluon and the hornet gun.. sorry for all you hivehand brappatap pewpew laser to the face lovers out there. Weapons are unlocked throughout the levels or through completing in-game challenges or certain weapons can be found in game such as crowbar can be obtained through smashing the glass on a box on the wall. There are a variety of game modes within Half Life, Single Player, Multi player and mods. Mods are basically user generated or developer generated changes to the game where u can play certain mods like specific designed game modes that can be played that have been added/updated after the game was released. Graphics: 7/10 The graphics in Half Life are unbelievable and this really plays a massive part within the storyline helping to immerse you in the game and still to this day the graphics are impressive and do enough to really entice you. Half Life 1 uses the goldSrc engine although a much more recognised and renowned graphics engine was the Source engine which was used within the Half Life game released by Valve Corporation it supports Microsoft Windows 32bit and 64bit. This was later branched out for use on the Xbox/Xbox360 and the Playstation 3. Later on within Counter-Strike: Source and Half Life 2 the same graphics engine is being used along with many other games such as the popular sandbox style garry's mod and fps zeno clash. Audio: 8/10 The audio within half life 1 is truly blarzay, for its time it pushes the boundaries and Sierra really went all out on producing a game with the aesthetics to push gaming to the next level, and to do this they put tremendous effort on producing sound audio, amazing graphics and unreal gameplay. Haha I just have to share this Half Life 1 introduction music with you, I mean its pwnage have a listen - imagine your fat bass speakers the cut scene opening up carnage in the room a teleportation DISASTER and this music fades in boomboompow:
