A remake of the 70s flop funnily enough of the same name
and originally directed by the infamous Romero this film barely does
the 1st justice. Set in the modern day town of Ogden Marsh Iowa the
film does'nt waste time in mixing the action up and its only minutes
before the bullets are flying.
Timothy Olyphant plays the lead
and its a role which he does well as the film follows him as the
sherriff of a rapidly infected town, together with his wife and a few
others they embark on a well acted escape and survival plot from what i
like to call "Los Locos"(sounds cooler),one by one the cast gets no
remorse as they're quickly picked off in some fairly original ways mixed
in with that is an imposed military marshal law and quarantine where
they round everyone incuding the infected into a flimsy fenced
compound,(honey+nuts+dog=pain,or results there of)
This is
Romero's second attempt on the team for this film and its a safe bet to
get it right this time, the film closely shadows the first and with a few
adjustments puts it on line with others of the genre to the extent
where you cant help think this subject is starting to become a little
overplayed (Resident Evil series,28days/weeks later and most of Romero's
other movies).fortunatly enough this picture sticks true to style and
theres plenty of gore as the solid acting cast work well
together,Timothy and his onscreen wife the hot Rhadha Mitchell work well
and the chemistry can easily be seen between them helping make their
roles more convincing only to be let down by the fairly withdrawn face
of Joe Anderson(sheriffs deputy),i mean if your partner was showing the
signs of craziness would you arm him to the teeth?
In all this is
a decent movie with a few skidmark moments which plays better than
others of the same type however i would wait for the dvd release(or
alternatively watch the 1973 edition which is almost identical to this
one) which i think will be sooner than expected, definitely sooner than
the sequel which the ending blatantly imposes.
