This is another game that I really need to try. I remember trying the PS3 demo years ago and being keen on it though, possibly because of how zoomed in it seemed. Too used to older 4X games like Civ 2 and Alpha Centauri.

you should give it a go, I like the world view over strategic view. You can zoom in pretty close. I'm not sure how it compares to the older versions as this is my first one.

I'd definitely recommend checking out the older titles, I don't know know how much Civ 5 differs though. I know Alpha Centauri still has a fair following, just finished it recently myself. http://www.gog.com/game/sid_meiers_alpha_centauri

I will try to give Civ V a go. Wonder if the series will hit next gen.

I have it, and a few of the expansions. It does require a few mods to make it really enjoyable though, super giant earth and 32 civs is a must have, oh a mod for future tech and stuff.

yeah i used the humble bundle to pick up civ 4, still yet to play it though. Have downloaded all the dlc for civ5. I am thinking of making a huge earth multiplayer game if there is enough interest.
I did the one-city challenge with venice, ethiopia and india.
India are great because your civ will be super happy, since the city will be huge as will the population (2x happiness and 0.5 happiness for more cities or something like that, so one city works great)
Venice just rake in the cash and buy spaceship parts(cannot buy cities though in the one city challenge)
Ethiopia are double strengthed when defending against a civ that has more cities than them.
